便携式X光机主要分为一体机和分体机两类；一体机机长通常在50-70CM，机器设有手提设计，工作时置于平面上，机器两端分别为发射与接受X射线，经过处理后由机器一段自带的影像增强器观测。对于部分高档数字便携式X光机通常可以进行AV视频输出或USB输出连接电脑处理或连接打印机打印。此类一体机不使用时可使用专用手提箱存放携带；另一类分体机多用于工业检测行业，将机器置于水平面左右两端或专用工作台上下对其中产品进行检测，体积相对于一体机要略大些。
